If you are traveling or moving across the country, you may have opted to have your car shipped instead of driving it and are busy making preparations for its transport. However, while you are preparing your car for shipment, make sure you avoid the following mistakes.

Filling up the Gas Tank

Especially if you know that the gas prices are higher at the new destination, you may be tempted to go ahead and fill up your tank to save money once you get there. However, you need to avoid filling your gas tank up before it is shipped.

If your car has a full tank, the gas will add excess weight to your vehicle. Since some car shipment companies charge by the vehicle's weight, you would probably wind up spending more money than if you fill up the tank at your destination.

Also, the trailer on which your car is being transported is designed for a maximum amount of weight. Any additional pounds could throw the trailer off balance, risking the safety of the driver, other vehicles on the road, and the cars on the trailer.

Before you take your car for shipment, make sure the tank only has enough to get to the auto transportation service, loaded onto the trailer, and taken off of the trailer. This will ensure that your tank is as empty as possible before it is loaded.

Forgetting to Remove Exterior Accessories

If you have customized your car in any way, you do not want to make the mistake of leaving these accessories on the car while it is being transported. Leaving an aftermarket spoiler, extended headlights, or an antenna on your car could increase the chance that they are accidentally damaged while being transported. Also, large external accessories could damage other vehicles being shipped in the trailer.

Before you take your car to the service, remove as many of the accessories as possible. If you are unsure how to remove a spoiler or other item, try to take your car to your mechanic beforehand. If you are unable to do this, ask the transportation service for help, as it is likely they have seen your particular accessory before and know how to remove it.

Avoiding the above mistakes can help ensure that your car arrives at its location safely and without damage. For more information on preparing your car for shipping, speak with the auto transportation services representative for personalized advice.
